I recently renovated my apartment. As a policy, before buying any product, I research the market and collect quotations from at-least three vendors. I was a layman when it came to purchasing glass and I ended up struggling quite a bit to purchase suitable glass.

What I learned from the experience was an eye-opener and could potentially save you a lot of money.

Glass is always measured in inches. However, while buying the buyer is billed in feet with rounding off to the nearest greater half-feet.

For example, for a shelf, we need glass of length about 14 inches. Please remember, 12 inches = 1 feet and 6 inches = 0.5 feet.

The glass vendor will round off the measurement to the nearest greater half-feet. That is 18 inches. (6 inch x 3).

For shelves, the recommended thickness is 8 mm or 12 mm. 8 mm costs around Rs.50/sq. ft. and 12 mm costs around Rs.80/sq. ft.

Going by this rate, 14 sq. inch shelve of 12 mm thickness should cost Rs.93.30 where as glass vendor actually charges Rs.120/- (for 1.5 sq. Feet).

The glass also requires polishing. Polishing is charged per sq. feet costing at Rs.7/- to Rs.15/-

For a 12 mm glass shelves of size 14 inches width and 14 inches depth:

Theoretical Cost Breakup:
Total area of glass: 14” * 14” = 196 sq. inch = 1.3611 sq. feet
Cost of glass (@ Rs. 80/sq. ft): 1.3611 * 80 = Rs108.88/-
Cost of polishing (@ Rs. 7/sq. feet) = 1.3611 sq. feet x 7 = 9.52
Total actual cost: 108.88 + 9.52 = Rs. 118.40/-

Actual Cost Breakup:
Rounding off: 14” (1.166 feet) to 1.5 feet.

Hence, total area of glass: 1.5 * 1.5 = 2.25 sq. feet
Cost of glass (@ Rs. 80/sq. ft.): 2.25 * 80 = Rs. 180/-
Cost of polishing (@ Rs. 7/sq. feet) = 2.25sq. feet x 7 = Rs. 15.75
Total actual cost: 180 + 15.75 = Rs. 195.75/-

Difference in cost: Rs. 77.35/-

Hence, while constructing your house or any other project, ensure that the dimensions are either in whole-feet or half-feet. For ex: width maybe either 1.5 feet or 2.0 feet but never 1.2 feet or 1.6 feet.

I hold Maruti Alto. Recently I forgot keys inside the car and locked it. Coming after one and half hour I realized car engine was stopped but battery is on and keys are inside in the car. My trouble slowly started thinking how to unlock the vehicle and get the battery re-charge. Because MFI engines doesn’t start by pushing the car. And other problem is power steering and braking. Both will become hard and not work. Battery re-charging or getting new battery is an option. My house is far away and home keys are also inside the car. I have no other option to find key maker to unlock. I searched around the places and I found car accessories fitting guy. I told him the situation and asked him to help in unlocking the car. Even he tried various methods to unlock, unfortunately he was not succeed. I remember my old days I used to unlock Maruti 800 by inserting scale in the glass window and push down. Finally that method is adopted for unlocking. I have not found the scale but I found thick card board. I don’t have any option apart from that. So I tried to insert the cardboard. Instantly car was unlocked and I and my friend surprised. I felt happy in unlocking the car and my first step succeeded. Major big problem is to get battery recharge. MFI engines do not start by pushing the car. I have spanners in the car which helped me in removing the battery from the car. Few days before battery got completely discharged and I was assuming battery is dead and it’s a time to replace because my earlier situations made my mind to change the battery. When I have given the car for the servicing, they indicated me that the battery will not work because its life is around 2 years. I have really maintained the battery in very good condition by taking to battery check up guy and getting distil water level maintain. Now its more than 3 years still running with the battery that has come with the vehicle. My car music receiver shows me the voltage so that I will know when the car voltage drops I immediately rush to the battery repair guy. Because of the summer heat batteries get drain fast. Minor problems got resolved. Now in this case, I assumed it’s a great challenge to find a battery repair guy. I removed and lifted the battery from the car engine. I felt battery is weight and very hot. Because battery tends to become hot when they get discharge completely that too walked in the hot sun for 200 meters and enquiring the battery shop.

Road side two wheeler mechanics really helped me in telling me that discharge the battery by shorting completely and vehicle can be pushed and it get starts. I again remember my old days. We used to start the vehicles by pushing but I still have a doubt that vehicle will not start because its MFI engine. I don’t have any other option so I have too opt for pushing the car. We have fitted the discharge battery in the engine and guys are pushing the car I released power steering is very hard to rotate and brakes are very hard like a rock and not working. Finally In a moment vehicle got started. I am very lucky on that day. I was in prediction that MFI engines will not start. But practically engines started working.

It’s a good advantage for the Maruti udyog vehicles for unlocking the car without the keys and the same is also disadvantage for car theft.

By pushing the car, engine gets started in case the battery drains and also gets charge on the move. Maintenance free batteries are available in the market but very expensive compare to maintenance batteries. Now a days companies have stopped maintenance batteries and not available to the public but they are still they are supplying to the car manufactures, because car manufactures want to reduce the cost of the vehicle. This is India. .. Enjoy cheap products that come with the car.

Its a Plastic World. Lot of Companies around globally issusing life time – credit cards .. They dont charge any fees annually. People are tend to use the credit cards quite a while and most of them know how to use the credit cards.

What is credit card ? How it is useful to the customer ?

Credit cards are given by leading reputated banks based on the customer creditability. Credit describes given certain amount to spend money on speculative period and to pay the amount on or before due date. Basically its been given interest free for the period mentioned by the banker. Once exceeds the period you are eligible to pay interest from the date of due date.

Credit cards normally gives 45 days to 52 days interest free on buying commodities / food and dinning / travelling tickets and so on.
To withdrawal Cash interest is charged immediately.

Those who wanted to utilise the card in better manner can follow the tips.

1. Not required to carry money everytime. Planning is not required to buy any products in terms of carrying money.
2. Card can be swipped across petrol bumps , restraunts, mutliplexes, textile shops and so on
3. Can easy pay utility bills like telephones, mobile bills, electricity, property taxes, internet bills, purchase railway/bus/air tickets just by clicking the mouse.
4. Every credit card has tie with brands.. so that the amount you spend on the card can be discounted as a point which converts into value

Importancy of using maximum benefit of a card :

For an example you want to speculate INR50,000 .. swipe the card in known people swipping machine they charge 1.67% to 2% and they give cash. for INR 50,000 swipping charges around INR 1000.

Credit card limit around INR 100,000
Starting date : 1st December
Billing date : 31st December
Due date : 15th January

Instead of borrowing from local market for 3% interest you can opt for credit card swipping. Every month starting swipe INR 50,000 so that you will pay INR 1000 interest everymonth. You can invest first swipped amount in your business .

If you want to lend money you can pay 2% everymonth and also you earn 500 points of every INR 50000.

500 points value INR 500 …

I feel you all can take advantage of the card. …

The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase in plan that would become known as “EURO-ENGLISH”

In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with “f”. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e” in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

This is a message received from a friend:

I don’t know what you guys are paying for petrol… but here in Durban, we are also paying higher, up to 47.35 per Litre.. But my line of work is in Petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money’s worth for every litre.

Here at the Marian Hill pipeline, where I work in Durban, we deliver about 4 million litres in a 24-hour period through the pipeline..

One day is diesel; the next day is Jet fuel, and petrol, LRP and unleaded. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 Litres.

ONLY BUY OR FILL UP YOUR CAR OR BIKKIE IN THE EARLY MORNING WHEN THE GROUND TEMPERATURE IS STILL COLD. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground, the denser the fuel, when it gets warmer petrol expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening … your litre is not exactly a litre..

In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the petrol, diesel and Jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products play an important role. A 1degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

WHEN YOU’RE FILLING UP, DO NOT SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER OF THE NOZZLE TO A FAST MODE. If you look , you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages : Low, Middle and High. In slow mode, you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created, while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you’re getting less worth for your money..

ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TIPS IS TO FILL UP WHEN YOUR TANK IS HALF FULL. The reason for this is, the more fuel you have in your tank, the less air occupying its empty space. Petrol evaporates faster than you can imagine. Petroleum storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the petrol and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated, so that every litre is actually the exact amount.

ANOTHER REMINDER, IF THERE IS A FUEL TRUCK PUMPING INTO THE STORAGE TANKS, WHEN YOU STOP TO BUY, DO NOT FILL UP- most likely the petrol/diesel is being stirred up as the fuel is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom.

Hope, this will help you get the maximum value for your money..

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS ! LET’S SHARE INFORMATION AND BENEFIT ALL, FOR THE BETTER OF MANKIND.

Dealing with any clients in services is an art. In the case of IT, we primarily deal with American clients. It is useful to know how the English language works with them. Some of us may hesitate to speak to the client because we are not confident. When we practice the following tips, we can boost our confidence.

Example – I will try to organize the project artifacts and inform you of the same when it is done.

This is somewhat an Indian construct. It is better written simply as:
I will try to organize the project artifacts and inform you when that is done

2. Do not write or say, “I have some doubts on this issue”
The term “Doubt” is used in the sense of doubting someone – we use this term because in Indian languages (such as Tamil), the word for a “doubt” and a “question” is the same.
The correct usage (for clients) is:
I have a few questions on this issue

3. The term “regard” is not used much in American English. They usually do not say “regarding this issue” or “with regard to this”.
Simply use, “about this issue”.

4. Do not say “Pardon” when you want someone to repeat what they said. The word “Pardon” is unusual for them and is somewhat formal.

5. Americans do not understand most of the Indian accent immediately – They only understand 75% of what we speak and then interpret the rest. Therefore try not to use shortcut terms such as “Can’t” or “Don’t”. Use the expanded “Cannot” or “Do not”.

6. Do not use the term “screwed up” liberally. If a situation is not good, it is better to say, “The situation is messed up”. Do not use words such as “shucks”, or “pissed off”.

7. As a general matter of form, Indians interrupt each other constantly in meetings – DO NOT interrupt a client when they are speaking. Over the phone, there could be delays – but wait for a short time before responding.

8. When explaining some complex issue, stop occasionally and ask “Does that make sense?”. This is preferable than “Do you understand me?”

9. In email communications, use proper punctuation. To explain something, without breaking your flow, use semicolons, hyphens or parenthesis.
As an example:
You have entered a new bug (the popup not showing up) in the defect tracking system; we could not reproduce it – although,
a screenshot would help.

Notice that a reference to the actual bug is added in parenthesis so that the sentence flow is not broken. Break a long sentence
using such punctuation.

10. In American English, a mail is a posted letter. An email is electronic mail. When you say
“I mailed the information to you”
, it means you sent an actual letter or package through the postal system.
The correct usage is:
“I emailed the information to you”

11. To “prepone” an appointment is an Indian usage. There is no actual word called prepone. You can “advance” an appointment.

12. In the term “N-tier Architecture” or “3-tier Architecture”, the word “tier” is NOT pronounced as “Tire”. I have seen many people pronounce it this way. The correct pronunciation is “tea-yar”. The “ti” is pronounced as “tea”.

13. The usages “September End”, “Month End”, “Day End” are not understood well by Americans. They use these as “End of September”, “End of Month” or “End of Day”.

14. Americans have weird conventions for time – when they say the time is “Quarter Of One”, they mean the time is 1:15. Better to ask them the exact time.

15. Indians commonly use the terms “Today Evening”, “Today Night”. These are not correct; “Today” means “This Day” where the Day stands for Daytime. Therefore “Today Night” is confusing. The correct usages are: “This Evening”, “Tonight”.
That applies for “Yesterday Night” and “Yesterday Evening”. The correct usages are: “Last Night” and “Last Evening”.

16. When Americans want to know the time, it is usual for them to say, “Do you have the time?”. This makes no sense to an Indian.

17. There is no word called “Updation”. You update somebody. You wait for updates to happen to the database. Avoid saying “Updation”.

18. When you talk with someone for the first time, refer to them as they refer to you – in America, the first conversation usually starts by using the first name. Therefore you can use the first name of a client. Do not say “Sir”. Do not call women “Madam”.

19. It is usual convention in initial emails (particularly technical) to expand abbreviations, this way:
We are planning to use the Java API For Registry (JAXR).

After mentioning the expanded form once, subsequently you can use the abbreviation.

20. Make sure you always have a subject in your emails and that the subject is relevant. Do not use a subject line such as HI.

21. Avoid using “Back” instead of “Back” Use “ago”. Back is the worst word for American. (For Days use “Ago”, for hours use “before”)

22.Avoid using “but” instead of “But” Use “However”.

23. Avoid using “Yesterday” hereafter use “Last day”.

24. Avoid using “Tomorrow” hereafter use “Next day”.
